Hear From Our Past Scholars: Their TSN Stories

Real journeys, real challenges, real breakthroughs—told by the strivers who lived them.

Strivers Network was a driving force behind my college application process last year. I was paired with a wonderful mentor with extensive experience in preparing students for US college admissions. The process, as stressful and complex as it can be, became much more manageable with a great mentor by my side. From personalized SAT guidance to essay reviews, from interview preparation to networking with other students, the services provided by TSN are invaluable. As a non-profit organization, they have a vision of opening doors to infinite opportunities for the talented youth of Sri Lanka. My mentor was always there to advise me whenever I needed guidance. Thanks to TSN, I found my path to follow my passion while contributing to the development of cutting-edge technology at Vanderbilt. TSN Scholars Pipeline is a springboard for ambitious youth to reach their goals and proudly represent the Sri Lankan flag on the world stage.

TSN’s personalized approach helped me address my weak areas, especially with essays. The mentors, who had experienced similar challenges with college applications, knew exactly what they were doing. The support I received not only from my mentor but also from other TSN members was exceptional. Grateful for the valuable assistance received!

I was in 13th grade and working for my Advanced Levels when I came across an Instagram post by The Strivers’ Network. Until then I had been completely unaware that colleges in the US, or any other country, offered full financial aid for students’ undergraduate studies. Since my A Levels were postponed thrice and it seemed my university entrance (once I sit for my A Levels) would take at least one more year, I decided to apply for The Strivers’ Network. Being chosen through an interview for the program, I was assigned a mentor who helped me through the application process to several universities in the US and guided me in choosing universities with curriculums that interested me. We met via Zoom once a week to discuss essays and personal statements, recommendation letters from teachers, transcripts as well as financial aid applications. It is because of The Strivers’ Network that I was able to begin my undergraduate studies at Williams, which covers 100% of my financial aid with no student contribution. As a student from a public school, I am grateful for the opportunity presented by The Stivers’ Network, because of whom today I can pursue my academic interests without any financial burden to my family.

TSN dramatically changed my academic experience. Doing my undergrad in a top research institute was not in my plan until I came across TSN. TSN not only helped me acknowledge such wonderful opportunities but guided me through each step of the time-consuming application process. They paired up mentors with students to provide one-to-one guidance, free of charge. I believe that initiatives like TSN should be encouraged to open up new pathways for Sri Lankan students, which can result in a better future for the country.

The Strivers’ Network will always hold an unforgettable place in my heart. I, who never imagined myself studying overseas, am today indulging in a life-altering education because of the role TSN played in bridging an asymmetry of information that has prevented many talented students from a much-deserved education. Its meritocratic model enables it to provide its services to the most deserving pool of students in our country at any particular year. It has proven its effectiveness over the years and requires a lot more support for further functionality and expansion. It provides its selected pool of applicants with application mentorship, guidance in essays, and SAT prep help free of charge. The TSN’s aspiration to build a network of intellectuals with a plethora of unique skills and personalities is something that often goes unappreciated, but something I truly admire. I hope it continues this much-needed service for many years to come and grows to the point where it will become the source of inspiration the youth of Sri Lankan desperately needs as it falls into the hands of corruption.
